SMASH
Georgetown University: Pre-College Program

Summer is a perfect time for motivated high school students to start thinking about college. Georgetown University’s application period for summer is now open.

The online pre-college programs help students ages 13 and older explore their interests. Through participating in our courses, students can discover if an interest could lead to a college major or even a future career.

miRcore

miRcore is a non- profit research organization with the mission to democratize medical research. miRcore is having their annual summer camp for motivated high school students is now open. Students will have the chance to research with tools that scientists currently use. Our camps provide a great opportunity for students to learn more about the intersection between biology and computer science, and work with other students with similar interests. During the camps, students will learn and engage in computational biology tools, analyzing high-throughput sequencing data, and R programming with machine learning for research. Our camp sessions offered include the Computational Biology Camp (CB), Biotechnology Sequencing Camp (BTS), and R Programming & Machine Learning Camp (R Camp). We also offer a special 3-week Sequencing Your Genome Camp, where students can sequence their own genomes!

A unique feature of our camps is that following the summer, students can continue their learning experience with the miRcore Volunteer Program, which meets throughout the school year online (remote students) and in person (at the University of Michigan and Scripps Research Institute). Our volunteer program guides students in year-long group research to publish research abstracts and to present at our Annual High School Research Conferences (2024 keynote speaker: Dr. Anthony Antonellis, Chair of the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan). Beyond personal research advances, the miRcore Volunteer Program supports student growth in leadership and healthcare advocacy through student-directed voluntary activities. Volunteers are trained to lead the school club Genes in Diseases and Symptoms (GIDAS), where they teach other students precision medicine and research methods to participate in the Conference. There are also opportunities to get involved in advocacy through miRcore Science Advocacy, where we train students to empathetically share important and sensitive science topics with others, such as genome privacy.

The flyer attached  includes the dates and times for all the 2024 summer camps we offer. miRcore is excited for students to join us this summer.

Boston University

It's that time when  students search for summer programs that tap into their interests and begin the next chapter in their lives of aligning them with their future career goals. At Boston University Summer Journalism Academy (BUSJ), students not only have the opportunity to have award-winning working journalists as instructors, but they also have the chance to experience Boston University and the city of Boston.  For 16 years Boston University College of Communication has offered this program to high school students to teach them core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing, focusing on hands-on experience in and around Boston and their home communities. Our photojournalism program taught by former Boston Globe photographer, Steve Haines, prepares students, like Taylor Coester (a BUSJ alum and now a BU student), to work alongside journalists in capturing the best photo for their stories. Parents and students enjoy hearing that no third-party vendors are involved, and they can experience an authentic pre-college experience at a college on their list.  Students decide if they would like to attend our program in-person or virtually. Applications for the on-campus session June 24 to July 12 are due April 19. Applications for learn-at-home sessions starting June 17, July 1 and July 15 are due May 10. If you have a student who wants a real college experience this summer and wants to pursue a communication degree, encourage them to learn more by visiting www.summerjournalism.org and applying soon, as limited seats are available for our in-person sessions.
