Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

All students seeking any type of financial assistance/aid for college will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The federal government is updating this application, and the application is slated to be available sometime in December 2023.

The FAFSA requires students and parents (for dependent students) to create an FSA ID for security purposes. The FSA ID allows for e-signatures and access to your FAFSA data each year of college. Note: A parent can use the same FSA ID for each child completing a FAFSA. To create an FSA ID, visit the Federal Student Aid website. In preparation for the new application next month, all seniors and their parents/guardians/contributors need to create an FSA ID in advance. The video below can assist you if necessary.

2024-2025 School Year Course Selection

Parents of current 9th-11th grade students are encouraged to attend the Parent Advisement Night meeting on January 11, 2024. During this meeting, counselors will review graduation requirements, review the course offerings for the 2024-2025 school year, and go over the course selection process. See specific times below.

Thursday, January 11, 2024

11th grade parents at 5:30 p.m.

9th and 10th grade parents at 6:45 p.m.

Dual Enrollment Interest Meeting

Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 6 p.m.

This mandatory meeting is for all students and parents interested in participating in the dual enrollment program for the 2024-2025 school year. Dual enrollment is an option for 11th and 12th grade students. The meeting presentation will be uploaded to the counseling website after the meeting, but it's imperative that students/parents attend this meeting for live interaction and Q&A.

Please begin researching the college admission requirements for dual enrollment. Some colleges will require a SAT or ACT score and if so, students need to register now for either the February ACT or March SAT in order to have scores back in time for their application.

NOTE: Georgia State is now test optional for students who have a 3.2 core GPA (Perimeter locations) and a 3.4 core GPA (Atlanta downtown location). If a student doesn't meet that GPA but has at least a 3.0 core, they will need either the SAT or ACT scores.

CHS Community Service Verification Form

The CHS PTSA Service Committee is pleased to provide a newly revised form for Chamblee High School students to give to nonprofits for a signature, etc., as a way to verify their service hours. The students can submit this form to their respective clubs or to the counseling office for the school's community service award. This form is another option for students, as other service letters or verification on letterhead can also still be submitted. The committee wanted to ease the burden on some nonprofits that did not already have a verification form for volunteers.

As such, we would like to invite eligible Chamblee High School students (see below) to apply for a paid opportunity to work alongside the best problem-solvers in the research and development enterprise. The pre-application will be used to match the applicant with GTRI employment opportunities. Please note that completion of the pre-application is not a guarantee of employment. The Office of Academic Special Programs at the University of Georgia invites students in grades 9-12 to apply for the 49th Georgia Junior Science & Humanities Symposium, sponsored by the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, and U.S. Air Force and Space Force.

GJSHS provides participants with a unique opportunity to conduct high-level research in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), prepare a scientific paper, and present their work to a panel of judges and their peers in the format of an academic, scientific conference. Participants will develop higher-order thinking skills and integrated learning across disciplines through the process of scientific inquiry, writing a research paper, and delivering a presentation -- all skills that will benefit future post-secondary and graduate pursuits.

GJSHS will be held February 25-27, 2024 at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel. To be selected, students submit an abstract and research paper (6-20 pages), which will be reviewed by a team of qualified STEM research professionals. Based on their evaluations, approximately 50 students will be invited to present at the three-day GJSHS event on the University of Georgia campus in February.

The application deadline for GJSHS is January 9, 2024. Details about eligibility, the application process, judging criteria, and Rules & Guidelines for competition are available in the GJSHS Handbook with Rules & Guidelines. The online application will open on December 1, 2023 at www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/gjshs

Students who are selected to participate in GJSHS will compete for cash awards, scholarships, and the opportunity to meet and network with other students and some of the nation's top STEM professionals at the National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium, held May 1-4, 2024 in Albuquerque, NM.

FBI Teen Academy

Each year, FBI Atlanta accepts applications for its Summer Teen Academy. Students are provided with presentations on topics including cyber-crime, civil rights, hate crimes, terrorism, criminal matters, evidence response, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students learn from Special Agents, Intelligence Analysts, and professional staff about investigative methods that include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.

The Teen Academy is held annually in June at the FBI Atlanta Field Office, Atlanta GA from roughly 8am to 430pm. The date for next summer is tentatively June 11 or June 12. Participants must be Georgia high school students who are juniors or seniors for the 2023-2024 school year. The program is competitive and requires a written essay as a part of the application. At this time, the application is not live, but we wanted to go ahead and get the word out so that you are able to garner potential interest from your students. Once live, likely in early January, a follow up email will be sent to you, letting you know that the application form is available and can be found on our website: https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/atlanta/community-outreach

The application and supporting essay must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 26, 2024. Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted. All applications must be sent to AT_CommunityOutreach@fbi.gov

College Visits and Information

College Rep Visits

There are no College Rep Visits currently scheduled at CHS.  Check back often for updates.

Juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend college rep visits. Admissions officers from colleges across the country choose Chamblee to visit out of all the high schools in Atlanta, and we want students to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about a college they are interested in or to even find out more about a college they don't know much about. Students can sign up for college rep visits in their Naviance account. Visits are 30 minutes long and will take place in the counseling office. Students must have teacher permission to attend and use their confirmation email as their pass for the visit. Check Naviance often as new reps are signing up daily!
