Senior Conferences

Class of 2024 students and parents should plan to schedule their senior conferences with their counselor beginning the week of Sept. 4th.  If no appointments are available, please check back periodically as the calendar only allows parents/students to make appointments a certain number of days in advance. 

Parents, parking is extremely limited, so we encourage you to attend the meeting virtually while the students and counselors meet in the counselor's office. Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email with the link to join the meeting via Microsoft Teams. Parents who do want to attend in person should account for the limited parking situation and give yourself ample time to find a parking space. Meetings will start with students on time, with or without parents, so that we can stay on schedule.

College Rep Visits

Juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend college rep visits. Admissions officers from colleges across the country choose Chamblee to visit out of all the high schools in Atlanta, and we want students to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about a college they are interested in or to even find out more about a college they don't know much about. Students can sign up for college rep visits in their Naviance account. Visits are 30 minutes long and will take place in the counseling office. Students must have teacher permission to attend and use their confirmation email as their pass for the visit. Check Naviance often as new reps are signing up daily!

The CHS PTSA Service Committee is pleased to provide a newly revised form for Chamblee High School students to give to nonprofits for a signature, etc., as a way to verify their service hours. The students can submit this form to their respective clubs or to the counseling office for the school's community service award. This form is another option for students, as other service letters or verification on letterhead can also still be submitted. The committee wanted to ease the burden on some nonprofits that did not already have a verification form for volunteers.

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to announce its annual International High School Essay Contest.  Due date is October 20, 2023. The Contest is open to all college-bound, high school seniors who submit an essay application through a Chapter of the Fraternity.

The essay must be original and neither previously published nor secured by copyright. The essay must be between 700 and 750 words in length. The type-written, double-spaced essay may be submitted via postal service or email in Microsoft Word.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is among the largest undergraduate scholarship programs available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend the nation’s best four-year colleges and universities. Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational experience – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees. 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

• Senior standing – Plan to graduate from a U.S. high school in spring 2024.
• Fall College Enrollment – Intend to enroll in an accredited four-year college beginning in fall 2024.
• GPA – Earn a minimum, cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above.
• Income –Demonstrate unmet financial need. We will consider applicants with a maximum annual gross income of $95,000. Last year’s cohort of new  College Scholarship recipients had a median family income of approximately $35,000.  During the selection process, the Foundation will conduct a full financial review which will take into account all income and assets of the student and the student’s parents.

THIS HIGHLY COMPETITIVE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDES:

• Up to $55,000 per year to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate school.
• Ability to pursue any area of study.
• Personal advising about selecting a college and navigating financial aid.
• Multifaceted advising about how to transition to college and maximize the student experience.

The University of Alabama's Free App Week, running October 16-20, 2023. 

During Free App Week, students will have until 11:59 p.m. CDT on Friday, October 20 to complete their application via the UA Undergraduate app. 

Applications submitted via the Common App will continue to require a $40 application fee during this week.

Every year, we award 42 Georgia high school seniors full scholarships to attend the University of North Georgia and participate in the Corps of Cadets—the Boar’s Head Brigade. On average, we only receive 70 to 80 qualified applicants each year!
 
We’re extremely interested in college-bound Georgia-resident students who might be considering military programs in college. The Georgia Military Service Scholarship (GMSS) pays for tuition, fees, room, meals, books, and uniforms for eight semesters; about $80,000 over four years. 

In addition to the $80,000 scholarship, recipients become Soldiers in the Georgia Army National Guard and earn pay and benefits that total at least $30,000 and up to $55,000 or more during their time in college, and many are paid even more for occupying leadership roles in the Corps of Cadets. This money can cover other expenses and eliminate the financial stress of college altogether: recipients can graduate with no college debt, get paid to go to college, and have money left in the bank.
  
We have a Guard unit on our Dahlonega campus for GMSS recipients and other Guard Soldiers who are cadets: so for the first two years, there is no need to commute to weekend drills. After two years, they enter the Simultaneous Membership Program and shadow Guard lieutenants in their Guard units.
  
GMSS recipients are not deployable while in college. After college, recipients incur an eight-year service obligation (same for all military officer commissions). The first four years of that commitment is to the Guard. After four years, they may request to transition to the regular Army, or serve their remaining two-year active commitment in the Guard. The Guard provides security for the citizens of Georgia, and provides a public good to the State of Georgia during disasters, pandemics, civil unrest, cyber attacks, and more. It is not necessary to enlist in the Guard to apply for the scholarship. However, recipients who accept scholarship offers will enlist before receiving benefits.
 

USMAA virtual admissions Q&A sessions for students. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA)is  one of the five federal service academies that include West Point, Annapolis, Air Force, and Coast Guard academies. Like all federal service academies, students receive full tuition, room and board, and books at no cost.

Federal service academies are not for everyone but we encourage those students looking to serve their country and accept a demanding academic schedule to apply. Like all federal service academies, there is no application fee for USMMA.

Our rigorous four-year academic program is highlighted by the Academy’s Sea Year experience. Through this unique program, every student gains real-world leadership experience working aboard commercial and military ships sailing to ports around the world during three academic terms. Our students pursue a degree in one of five majors offered through two academic departments: Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation. Graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy earn a Bachelor of Science degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license, and a commission in the U.S. armed forces. Our graduates have an option to work as ship’s officers in the U.S. maritime industry or serve as commissioned officers on active duty in any branch of service.

Each year, FBI Atlanta accepts applications for its Summer Teen Academy. Students are provided with presentations on topics including cyber-crime, civil rights, hate crimes, terrorism, criminal matters, evidence response, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students learn from Special Agents, Intelligence Analysts, and professional staff about investigative methods that include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.  

The Teen Academy is held annually in June at the FBI Atlanta Field Office, Atlanta GA from roughly 8am to 430pm. The date for next summer is tentatively June 11 or June 12. Participants must be Georgia high school students who are juniors or seniors for the 2023-2024 school year. The program is competitive and requires a written essay as a part of the application. At this time, the application is not live, but we wanted to go ahead and get the word out so that you are able to garner potential interest from your students. Once live, likely in early January, a follow up email will be sent to you, letting you know that the application form is available and can be found on our website: https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/atlanta/community-outreach. 

The application and supporting essay must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 26, 2024. Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted. All applications must be sent to AT_CommunityOutreach@fbi.gov.

The Blue & Gold Foundation approved a $9,000 grant to provide classroom support for each of our faculty and staff at our most recent meeting.  We are delighted to provide funds to assist our outstanding teachers with classroom and curriculum enhancements.
